Hand, Wrist, and Elbow Pain

Bob M.

After a left arm injury from shoveling snow, I received therapy from Michael, who combined massage, manipulation, at-home exercises, and laser.

There are many causes of hand, wrist, and elbow pain. Because your hands and arms are so interconnected, a task or injury that involves one part, such as your lower arm, can cause everything from finger numbness to elbow pain.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) can occur with repetitive use such as keyboarding, frequent gripping, and load loading of the hands. Usually, this is a long-term process of overload of the muscles to the fingers that cause them to thicken and compress on nerves at the wrist as they go into the hand causing numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness. It is common in older workers, pregnant women, and females thirty-five years of age and older.

Physical therapy can help this condition by working to restore flexibility, increase strength and decrease pain numbness and tingling. When caught early, symptoms can be eliminated without surgical interventions as pressure on the nerves to the hand can be relieved. You will also learn how to reduce stress to the nerves of the hand and prevent further injury.

Tennis Elbow

Don’t play tennis? You can still have Tennis Elbow! Also known as lateral epicondylitis, it is a common condition that affects the outside of the elbow. Tennis Elbow often occurs with overstrain from lifting or use of the hands with the palms facing downward. This condition responds well to hands-on physical therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises and in some cases, bracing to take pressure off the elbow.

Additional Conditions

Our physical therapists commonly see numerous conditions of the hand wrist and elbow including:

  • Trigger finger
  • Arthritis
